Rebuilding Self-Worth & Soothing the Inner Critic: IFS Therapy for Binge Eating Disorder
May 6, 2025Part 1 of 2
It’s a common refrain: “Adina, I just want to hit my ideal weight,” or “I can’t stand looking in the mirror.” For men, it often sounds like, “I want to get bigger.” Growing up, many of us looked up to superheroes—figures with lean, muscular bodies that were the idealized standard of strength and beauty.
In this blog, we focus on women, or those who self-identify as women, and their hidden struggles with eating disorders. One of the most complex emotional battles they face is Binge Eating Disorder (BED)—a disorder often rooted in distorted beliefs about self-worth and body image. This struggle isn’t just about food; it’s a battle between parts of the self—those parts that feel unworthy or disconnected. But what if there was a way to reconnect with your true self, beyond the destructive patterns of eating disorders?
In this post, we’ll explore how Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy can help you rebuild your self-worth and heal from binge eating by focusing on the different parts of yourself that drive harmful behaviors. By understanding and healing the parts that feel unworthy, we can uncover a path to lasting transformation.
The Hidden Battle Within: Exploring the Parts of Self in Eating Disorders
IFS therapy is based on the idea that we are made up of different parts, each carrying its own beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. These parts deeply influence how we view our worth and react to food. When it comes to binge eating, some of the most common parts include:
- The Inner Critic: A harsh, judgmental voice telling us that we are not good enough or that our bodies are flawed.
- The Perfectionist: A part that links our worth to our appearance or achievements, often leading to harmful food-related rituals.
- The Protector: A part that turns to food as a coping mechanism to shield us from emotional pain or vulnerability.
- The Exile: A vulnerable part that feels unworthy or broken, often locked away because facing these feelings is too painful.
Through IFS therapy, these parts can be identified, understood, and healed. By addressing the root causes of binge eating, we can start to heal from within and reclaim our sense of worth.
Healing the Exiled Parts: Unburdening Shame and Reclaiming Self-Worth
A core goal of IFS therapy is to heal the exiled parts—the vulnerable aspects of ourselves that carry deep shame, fear, and feelings of unworthiness. In the case of binge eating, these exiled parts are often the ones that drive unhealthy behaviors around food.
During an intensive therapy session, we focus on creating a safe internal space where these exiled parts can be accessed and healed. This involves understanding the trauma and beliefs these parts carry, unburdening them, and helping the client reconnect with their inherent worth.
I’m often asked, Is the goal of IFS therapy to get rid of these parts? And the answer is H*ll no! We don’t want to erase the exiled parts (or any parts, for that matter). The goal is to unburden them. Exiles are often desperate to be seen, heard, and rescued from their stuck place. They hold pain, but they also hold wisdom.
By healing these exiled parts, clients can replace negative beliefs with ones that reflect their true value. This process allows individuals to realize that they are worthy of love and compassion, no matter what they eat or how they look—mic drop!
Wrap-Up: Moving Forward with Compassionate Healing for Binge Eating Disorder
Rebuilding self-worth through Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy for binge eating disorder and body image issues is not an overnight journey. However, it’s one that is rooted in deep self-compassion, understanding, and the willingness to engage with the parts of ourselves that have long been overlooked or judged.
This healing process involves building curiosity instead of judgment, embracing all parts of ourselves with compassion, and ultimately empowering our core selves to lead. It’s about recognizing that our behaviors and emotions—though they may sometimes seem destructive—are often protective mechanisms trying to keep us safe. With patience and consistent effort, we can rewrite our stories, moving from shame and self-criticism to self-love and acceptance.
As you begin or continue this journey, remember that every step, no matter how small, is a step toward healing. Through IFS, you can reframe your relationship with your body, break the cycles of disordered eating, and rebuild a sense of self-worth that isn’t tied to external factors or past wounds. You are worthy of love, health, and the peace that comes from truly accepting yourself.
In Part 2, we will transform the Inner Critic and rebuild core self-worth, continuing the journey toward a healthier, more empowered version of yourself.
