“If you put shame in a petri dish, it needs three ingredients to grow exponentially: secrecy, silence, and judgment. If you put the same amount of shame in the petri dish and douse it with empathy, it can’t survive.”
— Brené Brown
The Reality of Shame and Success
Society tends to reward outward success—wealth, power, and status—while neglecting the emotional toll it takes. Many of the men who call me struggle to reconcile their outward achievements with an inner narrative of “not enough.”
For men, shame often comes from the belief that asking for help is a sign of weakness. Society conditions them to believe that any problem can be solved with harder work and grit. But as I tell my clients after 11 years in private practice: you can’t figure it all out alone. Everyone needs help.
Shame thrives in secrecy, silence, and judgment. When left unchecked, it negatively impacts relationships, leads to self-isolation, and triggers coping mechanisms like addiction, perfectionism, or numbing behaviors.
Therapy Intensives: A Bold Alternative to Traditional Therapy
What is a Therapy Intensive?
A therapy intensive is a highly focused and efficient approach to healing. In a condensed timeframe, clients can achieve the equivalent of six months of traditional therapy in just a few weeks.
Imagine dedicating 20 hours to deep, transformative work, bypassing the slower pace of weekly sessions. The intensive format allows us to dive deep into the root causes of shame and self-judgment, creating space for profound breakthroughs.
The Structure of a Therapy Intensive:
Initial Phase: The first 13-14 hours are scheduled in 2-3 hour blocks, fostering immersive exploration.
Tapering Off: Sessions then spread out (every other week) to complete the 20-hour process.
This structure balances intensity with reflection, allowing clients to process insights and implement changes effectively.
Why Therapy Intensives Work
1. Rapid Progress
Traditional talk therapy is valuable but can feel slow for those facing urgent struggles. Therapy intensives provide an uninterrupted space to focus deeply, making it possible to achieve in weeks what might take months or even years.
2. Addressing Shame at its Core
Shame acts as a protector, shielding us from confronting the trauma or beliefs that feed feelings of inadequacy. Therapy intensives create a safe environment to explore these deeper layers, disrupting cycles of self-judgment and unhelpful coping mechanisms.
3. Tailored, Holistic Approaches
In therapy intensives, I use an integrative blend of approaches, including:
- Internal Family Systems (IFS): Healing the inner critic and reconnecting with core self-worth.
- Expressive Writing and Metaphor: Unpacking emotions and rewriting harmful narratives.
- Somatic Work: Releasing trauma stored in the body.
- Mindfulness and Meditation: Cultivating presence and self-compassion.
4. Momentum for Lasting Change
The immersive format fosters momentum, allowing clients to connect the dots quickly and build on their progress. This momentum is key to breaking through entrenched patterns of shame and judgment.
Overcoming the “Not Enough” Narrative
Shame often stems from societal and familial pressures—like parents with unrelentingly high expectations or a culture that equates worth with achievement. The inner critic, often shaped by these early experiences, becomes loud and unforgiving, perpetuating feelings of inadequacy.
Healing begins by understanding these root causes and challenging the internalized beliefs that fuel shame. Therapy intensives help clients reconnect with their strengths and embrace their full humanity—strengths, weaknesses, and all.
A Path to Freedom
Therapy intensives provide a unique opportunity for transformation. One client described the process as “voodoo magic” and shared how they felt “whole and lighter, no more darkness.”
If you’re tired of wearing the mask of success while feeling disconnected and “not enough” on the inside, know that it can get better. With the right tools and support, you can break free from shame, heal self-judgment, and rediscover a sense of inner peace.
